Notting Hill Carnival 2017 is here
Notting Hill Carnival is, of course, this Bank Holiday weekend and your councillors have been working hard to ensure residents and carnival goers have a safe and fun carnival.
We wrote to Sophie Linden, the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, who answers to the Mayor of London in July, expressing our concerns over the Carnival arrangements given the local tensions following the Grenfell fire and the ongoing terrorist threat. Her reply, shared below shows that your Councillors are making sure that your concerns are being heard at the highest levels.
We will continue to work towards a safer Notting Hill Carnival for all, now, during and after carnival. We'll be in the ward during carnival, documenting issues and having a debrief with police and other authorities afterwards.
We are pleased that the Carnival is due to start earlier this year and that the static sound systems will end at 7pm. However, many issues remain around the scale and after-effects of carnival that need to be addressed in the months ahead.
Carnival Measures
During Carnival, a number of road closures and restrictions are put in place. Key points are below. We would urge all residents to make sure they have read the recently published residents guide.
Key details include
- On Sunday and Monday all traffic, other than floats and emergency vehicles, will be refused entry into the area.
- As a result of a security review the police will again be maintaining the total Traffic Exclusion Zones overnight on the Sunday. The police are not able to give an exact time residents vehicles will be allowed within the Traffic Exclusion zones on either night of the Carnival. Access is reliant on the area being safe for residents and those working on the clear up, this includes the roads being fully swept. It is unlikely residents will be allowed access in their vehicles until the early hours of the Tuesday morning and they should only seek access at a closure point that is closest to their property.
- Residents on foot must have ID showing their name and address in order to get to their homes if they are in safety zones or if they have to go through a safety zone to get to their home.
Carnival Cleanup
Rubbish will be cleared each night from the main Carnival area, although the timings will be advised by the police. Main roads and areas around transport hubs also take priority. The barriers and signs will be removed by the police.
Your Councillors have ensured that Westminster Council provides a free cleaning service for residents whose front gardens/basements have been affected within the Carnival area.
Register for the free Notting Hill Carnival cleaning service for your garden via http://www.westminster.gov.uk/notting-hill-cleanup.
You can register from now until 5pm Thursday 31 August 2017.
We need your feedback on the clean up
Following this year’s carnival, we will be providing feedback on the carnival clear up. Please let us know your experiences on all aspects of Carnival, from communications from Westminster Council, the sound systems, policing, cleaning etc? All of your feedback will help us to fight to ensure we get a safer, cleaner and more manageable carnival in future’.
