The Mayor of London has indicated his desire to see this Cycle Superhighway built running from Swiss Cottage to Portland Place via Regent’s Park. As Mayor Khan has said ‘’Cycle-Superhighway 11 will play an important role improving the quality of our toxic air, improving Londoners’ health, and make thousands more people feel comfortable cycling.” Local residents across St John’s Wood have raised concerns to us about the plans, particularly in relation to gate closures in Regent’s Park and the potential displacement of traffic that this could cause.
Talks continue between Transport for London, The Royal Parks, Crown Estate Paving Commission (CEPC) and Westminster Council around the planned closure of gates into the park. The exact timings of the project remain uncertain. Westminster City Council is only responsible for the sections of the CS-11 along Portland Place and Avenue Road. We have no decision making role in relation to Regent’s Park this rests with the CEPC and The Royal Parks. We remain anxious about the impact the already installed cycle superhighways are having across the City on traffic flows and air quality. We would like to see a stop to their roll out so that a proper analysis can be made of their impact.
Your Councillors and Westminster Council have not been formally approached on any new proposal however residents can be assured we continue to lobby TfL expressing our concern on the impact CS-11 will have on local people. As Cllr Danny Chalkley, Cabinet Member City Highways & Public Protection recently commented, ‘Westminster’s position on CS11 has not changed, our continued opposition to the scheme which was consulted upon some time ago remains’.
